ELM – Self Assessment and Mentoring

ELM is a web-based tool serving as a reflective communication tool between a mentor and a protegee. Although it was originally designed as a teacher-student tool, an intriguing application is made now by a school principal using it to communicate with his new teachers. ELM is a self-reporting tool, used every week and helps as a “finger on the pulse”. Focus on an individual, ELM helps identifying emerging problems before the escalate while a larger picture of a group serves as a real-time monitoring device for the mentor:


These graphs present two of the 5 or 6 criteria used in between students in a teacher preparation course during a full semester. The Y axis represents a value between 1 and 5 and the X axis the course meeting during the semester.

Monitoring these graphs on a weekly base, helps the teacher orchestrate the course to minimize frustration and increase engagement.
